The ultimate roof tent guide. Find the right tent for your adventure!
Choosing a roof tent is a big deal, it's your home on wheels! But how do you know which tent is right for you? Don't worry, we'll help you clear up all the questions!
1. How big a tent do you need?
Many people think that you can compare a roof tent to a regular bed, but that's not true! Because roof tents have walls, you can use the entire space on the mattress, you lie more compactly than in a bed at home.
We offer three sizes:
120 cm wide : Perfect for solo adventurers or couples.
160 cm wide : Perfect for 2–3 people.
190 cm wide : Perfect for 4 people (or two adults and three smaller children).
💡 Important: A larger tent will take longer to warm up on cold nights. So choose a size that suits your needs!
2. Soft shell or hard shell. What's the difference?
Once you've chosen your size, the next question is: soft shell or hard shell? Here are the differences:
Soft shell tent, for those who want more space
✅ Takes up less space on the roof when folded.
✅ Lighter per sleeping place, more space for the weight.
✅ Can be mounted so that it opens on both sides.
✅ Larger range of accessories such as inner tents, air mattress and awnings.
✅ Bedding and other equipment can remain in the tent when it is folded.
🤔 Higher on the car than hard shell.
🤔 Lots of tent cloth to dry if it gets wet.
🤔 Takes a little longer to fold up/down than hard shells.
💡 Our softshell tents: Overland Explorer, Overland Soul and Overland Zen .
Hardshell tent, for those who want speed and simplicity
✅ Faster setup than soft shell.
✅ Low profile, smoother on the roof.
✅ Slim design, less air resistance.
✅ Removable ladder.
🤔 Takes up more space on the roof.
🤔 Weighs more per sleeping place.
🤔 Lower ceiling height.
🤔 Fewer accessories than softshell.
💡 Our hardshell tent: Overland Flow is the thinnest on the market!
3. Which model is right for you?
Once you have decided on the size and type of tent , it is time to find the right model for a soft shell if you have not chosen a hard shell!
Overland Explorer & Overland Soul
Entrance from below, on the side. Perfect for adding an awning and extra protection.
Overland Zen
Side entrance only. Simpler but without the option of an awning.
💡 Remember! In addition to function, design is a big part of the choice. Choose a tent you love to look at every time you go camping!
4. Does the tent fit your car?
Before you take your tent and set out on an adventure, you need to ensure your car can handle it:
✅ Roof rack required! Roof tents are mounted on rails or fixpoints. We recommend Thule Evo (not Edge).
❌ Avoid roof racks that are clamped to the car door ! They are not stable enough.
⚖️ Weight capacity ! Most roof racks can handle 75–100 kg while driving, but when the car is stationary they can handle significantly more!
💡 Rule of thumb: All medium-sized cars and up can handle even the largest tents.
5. Why should you choose a roof tent?
Sleeping in a roof tent isn't just about practice, it's about the experience.
✔️ Set up in under 5 minutes . Fast & easy.
✔️ Luxurious mattress . You don't have to sleep on the ground.
✔️ Pack less . Bedding can remain in the tent.
✔️ Unbeatable feeling . Fall asleep with the stars, wake up with nature.
